Brazilian energy companies Comerc Energia and Vibra Energia have officially inaugurated the Helio Valgas solar photovoltaic (PV) complex, a major addition to the country's renewable energy infrastructure. The 662-MWp solar project, located in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, covers a vast 1,497-hectare area in the municipality of Varzea de Palma.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by Brazil's Vice-President and Minister of Development Geraldo Alckmin, highlighted the significance of the Helio Valgas project in advancing the country's renewable energy goals. With a total investment of BRL 2 billion (USD 408.2 million/EUR 381.8 million), the solar complex features 1.2 million panels and is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the energy demands of approximately 800,000 local homes once fully operational.
Despite not being fully operational, Helio Valgas has already generated 119 GWh of energy since its initial energization in August 2023. The project's inclusion in the REIDI program, which offers tax incentives to companies investing in strategic infrastructure projects, underscores the federal government's commitment to boosting the renewable energy sector.
Alckmin emphasized the significance of the PV panel segment's inclusion in the Padis scheme, providing exemptions from import, IPI, and PIS-Cofins taxes. These measures aim to further incentivize investments in solar projects, contributing to the growth of the renewable energy industry in Brazil.
The Helio Valgas solar complex aligns with Brazil's broader efforts to diversify its energy mix and increase reliance on clean and sustainable sources. The inauguration marks a milestone in the country's journey toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
