RWE has signed a contract with Steelwind Nordenham for the production of up to 300 monopile foundations to support its offshore wind projects across Europe. Steelwind will allocate 320,000 tonnes of steel at its Nordenham facility over a 24-month period starting in 2027 to manufacture approximately 200 monopiles.
The agreement also allows for an extension of 12 months, adding an additional 160,000 tonnes of steel, potentially bringing the total number of monopiles to 300.
The monopile foundations will be used for RWE's offshore wind farms planned to go live in Europe from 2029 onwards. The contract also enables RWE to access additional services from Steelwind, including secondary steel structures and logistical support.
RWE aims to secure production capacity in a market facing supply chain constraints. The company emphasized that this framework agreement represents a significant step towards advancing its offshore wind ambitions in Europe.
“Europe needs more offshore wind energy to achieve its ambitious climate targets,” said Holger Himmel, Chief Financial Officer of RWE Offshore Wind. He added that the contract is key to ensuring the successful realization of RWE's European offshore projects.
Steelwind Nordenham's Managing Director, Jost Backhaus, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, noting that “this framework agreement is another forward-looking step… towards achieving Germany and Europe's climate targets, which require a strong offshore wind contribution.”
With this deal, RWE secures critical production resources, supporting its goal to accelerate offshore wind energy development and contribute to Europe's clean energy transition.
