independent energy developer has received approval from the South Gloucestershire Council to install a 99-MW/99-MWh battery system (BESS) in South Gloucestershire, .

The permit follows community consultations that prompted modifications to the project's design, scale, and location.

The Iron Acton BESS will occupy a 2.3-hectare site and comprise 19 battery units. This facility is expected to store enough to power approximately 26,700 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 18,300 tonnes.

The system is designed to capture energy during peak production periods and discharge it back into the grid during high demand, thereby aiding in stabilizing network frequency.

While the construction timeline has yet to be finalized, Balance Power aims to expedite the commissioning date, which was originally scheduled for June 2036.

The company currently has nearly 2 GW of projects in various stages of development. Earlier this month, it also secured planning approval for a separate 49.5-MW/99-MWh battery project in southwest Leicestershire.
