SSE Renewables has chosen as the turbine supplier for its Aberarder Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands, the company announced on Monday.

Under the agreement, Vestas will supply and install twelve V117-4.2 MW turbines, operating in 4.3MW mode, at the Aberarder site near Inverness in Strathnairn. The project secured a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) in September 2023 during the 's fifth allocation round, representing a significant investment of approximately £100 million. Construction is slated to commence by the end of 2024, with completion expected in late 2026.

Once operational, the wind farm is projected to generate enough green energy annually to power nearly 60,000 homes and reduce approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions in its first year of operation.

Located at an average altitude of 700 meters above sea level on a natural plateau, the Aberarder site will neighbor the operational Dunmaglass Wind Farm, jointly owned by SSE Renewables and UK Wind.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Vestas, whom we have collaborated with on other projects such as the in Shetland,” said Heather Donald, SSE Onshore Renewables Development and Construction Director. “The Aberarder Wind Farm marks a significant milestone in our portfolio, supporting and the UK in advancing clean power generation and securing our energy future.”
