Oman has advanced its renewable energy ambitions with the selection of nine prequalified applicants to develop the 500-MW Ibri III solar power project, representing a significant step towards enhancing its sustainable energy infrastructure.
Nama Power and Water Procurement (PWP), the exclusive purchaser of electricity from independent power plants in Oman, announced the successful bidders following a rigorous request for qualification (RFQ) process launched in January.
Among the prequalified applicants are prominent international firms and consortia, including Masdar from the UAE, ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia, Jinko Power, Sembcorp Utilities, TotalEnergies Renewables, Sumitomo Corp., Engie's International Power SA, and two consortia: Al Riyadh National Trading with Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO), and EDF Renewables partnered with Korean Western Power (KOWEPO).
In a statement, Nama PWP disclosed that they received a total of 12 submissions for qualification from a diverse pool of local and international entities. The Ibri III solar project, slated for construction in Al Dhahirah Governorate adjacent to Oman's inaugural Ibri II 500-MW solar initiative, is anticipated to commence operations by the final quarter of 2026.
The development underscores Oman's commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity and attracting substantial investments, with the Ibri III project estimated to require approximately OMR 155 million (USD 402m/EUR 377m) in funding.
