Statkraft has received planning approval for its 39.9MW Kitland Farm project, located north of Langford in North Somerset. The project, which aims to deliver renewable electricity to the national grid, will contribute to both national and local renewable energy targets, the developer said.

The approved plans also include provisions for a battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to store electricity and release it back into the grid during periods of high demand. This addition is part of the company's effort to maximize the site's renewable energy potential.

Statkraft engaged with the local community by holding both online and in-person consultation events in early 2024. Public feedback was incorporated into the final application, which was submitted to North Somerset Council in May 2024.

In terms of environmental impact, the project is expected to provide a 94% biodiversity net gain for local habitats. The development will include the planting of wildflower meadows, hedgerows, and an orchard in the eastern field near Wrington. Additionally, more than 3.5 kilometers of new public footpaths will be added to the site.

Statkraft also plans to support the local economy by collaborating with nearby suppliers during the construction and operation phases. The solar farm will provide Community Benefit Funding, expected to be worth over £600,000 during its 40-year operational life.

Construction of the Kitland Solar Farm is projected to begin in 2027.

Mark Henderson, Statkraft's senior solar project manager, expressed enthusiasm about the approval, saying, “We are delighted that our plans for a new solar farm at Kitland have been approved by North Somerset Council. Kitland Solar Farm has the potential to power the equivalent of 13,000 homes, helping to accelerate the UK towards a net-zero future as well as providing local benefits such as boosting wildlife and creating new footpaths and spaces for the public to enjoy.”

Henderson added, “I'd like to thank all those for engaging with us throughout the planning process. We are committed to being a good neighbour throughout the lifetime of the project and look forward to continuing to work with the local community.
