The German Federal Network Agency has completed the third planning approval procedure for a section of the SuedOstLink, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line intended to connect north-east Germany to Bavaria.
This approval specifically designates the route of the line as an underground cable between Nittenau and Pfatter in Bavaria. The planned route includes an innovative technique for crossing the Danube River using a controlled horizontal drilling method.
Construction work for this section had already commenced in autumn last year, following several early start permits granted by the agency. With the comprehensive permit now issued, TenneT TSO GmbH, the transmission system operator, can continue and expand the development of this 29km-long section.
The route, which begins west of Goppeltshof in Nittenau and extends through several municipalities, including Altenthann, Brennberg, and Wiesent, eventually crosses the Danube and reaches Pfatter. This project is part of Germany's efforts to strengthen its grid infrastructure and support the transition to renewable energy.
