EMEA has started construction on a 56MW/112MWh energy storage system (BESS) in Wetzen, Germany. The plant is part of a broader portfolio of 14 battery storage projects the company is developing in Germany, targeting a total storage capacity of over 900MW. Commissioning is scheduled for early 2026.

Equipped with advanced iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, the plant will be free of nickel and cobalt, providing improved sustainability, safety, and longevity. Wetzen's location offers favorable conditions for use, and the new storage facility will play a crucial role in stabilizing the electricity grid and aiding the integration of renewable energy sources.

Kilian Leykam, Director of Energy Storage Commercial at Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, remarked, “The start of construction of our battery storage project in Wetzen is another milestone for Aquila Clean Energy EMEA in Germany. The demand for energy storage solutions to compensate for fluctuating electricity generation from renewable energies is increasing. Projects like the one in Wetzen are important steps to meet this demand and drive forward the decarbonisation of the economy.”

The Wetzen plant, with a two-hour storage capacity, will assist in balancing energy and optimizing the wholesale market. This project is the second BESS plant under construction by Aquila Clean Energy EMEA in Germany. Trina Storage will supply the LFP cells, while H&MV Engineering will manage the construction and connections to the high-voltage grid. Currently, Aquila Clean Energy EMEA oversees a BESS portfolio of 4.5GW across .
