Swedish energy and infrastructure consultancy AFRY AB has been chosen to spearhead a study evaluating the feasibility of establishing a large-scale green hydrogen production facility in Helsinki, Finland. The contract was awarded by Finnish utility Helen Oy, as announced by AFRY on Tuesday.
The comprehensive study aims to assess the conditions necessary for viable green hydrogen production at the selected site.
AFRY plans to employ a top-down design approach for the analysis, which begins with overarching project and plant objectives, progressing through detailed engineering and discipline-specific decisions as the study advances. The completion of the study is anticipated by mid-2025, providing Helen with the critical analysis required for making an investment decision.
If implemented, the project would align with Helen's ambition to offer its customers carbon-neutral district heating, cooling, and electricity by 2030.
In September, Helen partnered with MAN Energy Solutions and its subsidiary H-TEC Systems, specializing in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers, to construct a 3-MW green hydrogen production plant near Helsinki's district heating network and Vuosaari Harbour.
