LEAG Begins Construction of 100-MW Battery Storage System in Upper Lusatia

German energy company LEAG has commenced construction on a 100-MW/137-MWh storage system, known as BigBattery Oberlausitz, at the Boxberg power plant site in , . The facility is anticipated to become operational in 2025.

Once completed, the BigBattery Oberlausitz will have the capacity to store equivalent to the annual demand of approximately 40 households in under 1.5 hours.

This new system will be twice as powerful as the 54-MWh sister facility, BigBattery Lausitz, which has been operational since 2020.

The battery storage system will consist of two components, each with a capacity of 50 MW, utilizing over 400 compact containers equipped with efficient iron phosphate batteries.

This project aligns with LEAG's broader objective to develop a battery storage park in the gigawatt range, aimed at transforming Lusatia—a former mining region—into a hub for green energy.
