BayWa, a Munich-based developer, has finalized the sale of its 95 megawatt (MW) Almodóvar solar park in Spain to German independent power producer Encavis AG. Located near Córdoba in Andalucía, the solar array is expected to be grid-connected by the fourth quarter of 2025, with an annual electricity generation capacity of 187 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
“This transaction marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between BayWa r.e. and Encavis AG, as we combine our expertise to advance numerous solar and wind projects across Europe,” stated Matthias Taft, Chief Executive of BayWa r.e.
The Almodóvar solar park is part of a broader strategy that includes a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) signed in 2021 with Finnish packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki, covering approximately 80% of the company's electricity needs in Europe. This agreement is noted as the largest European solar corporate VPPA within the packaging industry and the first solar corporate VPPA initiated by a Finnish company.
“We are pleased to announce the successful sale of another solar park developed by our team in Spain,” added Matthias Taft. “Almodóvar represents a continuation of our project sales across Europe in alignment with the accelerating energy transition.”
Juanjo Álvarez, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. projects in Spain, highlighted their decade-long presence and significant contributions to Spain's renewable energy sector: “Having developed over 600MW of wind and solar projects in Spain, it remains a key market for BayWa r.e. as we strive to lead in advancing the energy transition both locally and globally.”
