Amprion, a German transmission system operator (TSO), has announced delays in the delivery schedule for two offshore wind grid connections in the North Sea, known as BalWin1 and BalWin2. Originally slated to be operational by 2029 and 2030 respectively, the connections are now expected to come online in 2030 and 2031.
The revised timeline aligns with updated grid planning strategies, which previously envisioned a later completion window.
“We secured capacities for key construction trades early on but have faced challenges in accelerating timelines due to market constraints,” said Carsten Lehmköster, managing director at Amprion. “Despite efforts, achieving a faster schedule of completion by two or three years proved unfeasible.”
Amprion emphasized its commitment to supporting Germany's renewable energy expansion targets despite the setback.
“We continue to collaborate closely with our partners to navigate these tight market conditions,” Lehmköster added. “Building additional market capacity is imperative to meet our ambitious goals.”
