Enel Green Power has commenced operations at an 87MW solar plant located in Trino, within Italy's Piedmont region, marking a significant addition to the country's renewable energy infrastructure. The project, situated on a site previously hosting a combined cycle power plant and a nuclear facility, utilizes bifacial PV modules to optimize energy generation.
Central to the facility is a 25MW lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 100MWh, designed to support grid stability and provide ancillary services.
“In addition to maximizing renewable energy production, our integration of a large-scale battery storage system ensures grid reliability,” stated a spokesperson from Enel Green Power.
The project's financing included community involvement through Enel Green Power's Scelta Rinnovabile crowdfunding campaign, launched in 2022. The initiative exceeded its fundraising target by 150%, highlighting strong local support and investment in renewable energy initiatives.
Following commissioning, local participants in the crowdfunding campaign will begin to see returns on their investments. Enel Green Power emphasizes its commitment to community engagement, planning initiatives such as reforestation and restoration of historical buildings in the surrounding area of Borgo Leri-Cavour, once the summer residence of Count Camillo Benso of Cavour.
