JA Solar Technology Co Ltd , Trina Solar Co Ltd, and JinkoSolar Holding Co Ltd have emerged as the top players in a global ranking of solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturers, revealed today by Wood Mackenzie.
Wood Mackenzie noted that nine out of the top 12 manufacturers are Chinese companies. The analyst firm conducted assessments of more than 30 module manufacturers based on nine criteria, including experience, vertical integration, financial performance, and capacity utilization.
Yana Hryshko, head of solar supply chain at Wood Mackenzie and lead author of the report, explained the ranking criteria, stating, “Our ranking reflects a comprehensive summary of the most important criteria that buyers care about when purchasing solar PV modules.”
The report indicates that seven out of the top 12 manufacturers are expected to exceed 100 GW of module production capacity by 2027. Moreover, the combined capacity of wafers and cells among the top 10 ranked companies is projected to reach 830 GW within the next three years, which Wood Mackenzie suggests is enough to meet global demand twice over.
Despite an oversupply of manufacturing capacity, the top 10 ranked manufacturers are continuing to expand, with a focus on achieving greater vertical integration. Notably, eight companies among the top 12 are self-sufficient in cell capacity, while Tongwei and Risen are fully vertically integrated, covering the entire supply chain from polysilicon to module production.
