RWE has commenced a pre-application consultation aimed at developing a green hydrogen production facility on its land adjoining the Pembroke Power Station in South Wales. The consultation period for RWE's plans, termed Pembroke Green Hydrogen, will conclude on Monday, May 20, 2024.
In a bid to gather community feedback, RWE has invited locals to share their views on the proposed plans through a consultation process. The envisioned project entails the establishment of a circa 110Mwe electrolysis green hydrogen production facility, coupled with a 1.5km pipeline extending westward to connect with nearby industries.
Upon achieving operational status, the site is projected to yield two metric tonnes of hydrogen per hour, with oxygen emerging as the primary by-product. RWE estimates that by substituting fossil fuel consumption in local industrial operations, the hydrogen generated at Pembroke Green Hydrogen could slash local CO2 emissions by approximately 93,000 tonnes annually.
The UK Government's ambition to attain 6GW of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 has prompted a keen focus on regions like South Wales, recognized for their potential to underpin a more sustainable future for the area's industrial legacy.
Pembroke Green Hydrogen aligns with RWE's broader vision for Pembroke Net Zero Centre, envisaged as a nucleus of low-carbon innovation and clean energy generation at the power station site. The developer underscores its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, outlining plans to decarbonize existing operations at the power station while embracing new technologies such as hydrogen, battery energy storage systems, and floating offshore wind.
Richard Little, Director of Pembroke Net Zero Centre, emphasized the significance of green hydrogen generation in advancing the site's vision, stating, “Green hydrogen generation is further technology coming forward at RWE's Pembroke Power Station site, forming our vision for Pembroke Net Zero Centre.” He highlighted the role of such technologies in supporting Wales' pathway to Net Zero and encouraged community engagement in the consultation process to shape the project's trajectory.
RWE's proposals for Pembroke Net Zero Centre aim to leverage Pembrokeshire's local energy heritage, safeguard existing jobs, stimulate local economic investment, and create new employment opportunities throughout the project's lifecycle.
