Acciona Energía has completed the repowering of the Tahivilla wind farm in Tarifa, replacing 98 legacy turbines with 13 higher-capacity units and significantly boosting output.
The company said the upgrade increases annual energy production by 72% while maintaining the same grid evacuation capacity. The project is currently in the final commissioning phase.
Tahivilla is expected to generate about 254GWh of electricity annually, avoiding roughly 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Acciona Energía said the project is supported by a 15-year power purchase agreement with a private client, providing long-term revenue visibility and underpinning the investment case.
The repowering also received €8.3m in funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
According to the company, the project created more than 1,000 jobs associated with dismantling the original wind farm and constructing the new facility.
Acciona Energía added that reducing the number of turbines improves land use efficiency, enhances environmental integration and extends the site’s operational life while maximising the available wind resource.
The company said repowering existing wind farms can offer advantages over greenfield development, including stronger community acceptance, lower environmental impacts, shorter permitting timelines and reduced investment risk.
