Cummins’ electrolyser unit, Accelera, has delivered its largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser system to date to Linde’s under-development green hydrogen facility in Niagara Falls, New York. The 35-megawatt (MW) system will use hydroelectric power at Linde’s existing grey hydrogen site, leveraging existing liquefaction and distribution infrastructure to serve merchant demand.
The project, first announced in 2022, is expected to start operations in 2025 and is designed to double Linde’s U.S. green liquid hydrogen production capacity. Des McMenamim, General Manager of Electrolysers at Accelera, called the delivery a “significant milestone” for the company. “This project demonstrates our ability to deliver large-scale, reliable solutions that enable our customers to produce green hydrogen on a commercial scale,” he said.
The electrolyser units were manufactured at Accelera’s 500MW Fridley facility in Minnesota. However, the U.S. green hydrogen sector is facing headwinds after recent changes to federal tax incentives. In July, President Donald Trump signed legislation shortening the start-of-construction window for the 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit from 2033 to the end of 2027. Analysts warn that the tighter timeline may make it difficult for many projects to commence in time to qualify for the full incentive.
