Principle Power has completed integration of the third and final turbine for the 30-megawatt Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL) floating wind project, marking the end of onshore construction at the Port-La Nouvelle assembly site.
The turbine, a Vestas V164-10MW unit mounted on a WindFloat platform, will soon be towed offshore to join the first structure already installed 16km off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcarès, the company said in a social media post.
“This milestone concludes all onshore construction activities,” Principle Power stated, adding that the project demonstrates both the technical maturity of its floating technology and the strength of collaboration between project partners.
EFGL is being developed by Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE, with support from subcontractors including Euroports, Mammoet, Vestas, Eiffage Metal, Smulders, and Port-La Nouvelle infrastructure backed by the Region of Occitanie.
The project uses Principle Power’s third-generation WindFloat technology, drawing on operational experience from earlier deployments such as the 2MW WindFloat 1 (2011), the 25MW WindFloat Atlantic (2020), and the 50MW Kincardine project (2021).
The company said lessons from these earlier developments informed the design of the EFGL structures, while a fourth-generation platform is currently under development. These future designs are expected to support turbines of 15MW to 20MW and above, with improvements aimed at increasing reliability, streamlining execution, and optimising energy production.
