Industry association SolarPower Europe on Tuesday announced the launch of the Battery Storage Europe Platform, a new initiative aimed at strengthening the regulatory and business case for battery storage technologies across the European Union.
The platform is calling for a tenfold increase in battery storage capacity by 2030 to support the continued expansion of solar and other renewable energy sources. According to the organisation, battery systems will be critical for balancing intermittent energy generation and maintaining grid stability as the EU transitions to cleaner energy.
“Battery storage is no longer optional – it is essential,” said Juhi Dion Sud, who has been appointed to lead the platform. “Without urgent action, the EU risks stalling its energy transition.”
The initiative has backing from strategic founding partners including Renewable Energy Insurance Broker, Norwegian energy company Statkraft, and solar engineering firm Sunotec. Over 50 representatives from leading battery storage companies attended the launch event in Brussels.
SolarPower Europe said the platform will serve as a dedicated advocacy body for the battery storage sector, aiming to fill a gap in representation at the EU level. Its activities will include engagement with policymakers, and the development of legislative frameworks to support battery manufacturing and deployment across the region.
The EU currently has approximately 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of installed battery energy storage capacity. Dion Sud stated the bloc would need to increase this figure to between 500 and 780 GWh by the end of the decade to remain aligned with its 2030 renewable energy targets.
“Our core ask: 10 times more battery storage in five years,” she added.
SolarPower Europe CEO Walburga Hemetsberger said the integration of storage systems is essential to match the accelerating pace of solar energy deployment across the continent. “Solar and storage are the perfect pair,” Hemetsberger noted. “Battery storage must grow at the same pace.
The platform is open to members of SolarPower Europe, with additional opportunities available for strategic partners interested in shaping its work.
