BW ESS and Zelos Energy Developments are collaborating on the development of a 1,500 megawatt portfolio of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Northeast Germany, the companies said on Tuesday.
The projects are planned for the federal states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Sachsen-Anhalt, within the transmission system operator 50Hertz’s service area. The portfolio is expected to reach ready-to-build status between 2025 and 2027.
Zelos will lead on land acquisition, grid connections, and permitting, while BW ESS will manage engineering, procurement, financing, and construction activities.
“The partnership marks an important step as we jointly work to accelerate the energy transition and deliver impactful progress on the path toward a more sustainable energy future,” said Timo Juritsch, managing director of Zelos Energy Developments.
The companies noted that the projects are being developed in cooperation with local communities and in alignment with environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.
“This partnership brings valuable experience and expertise to support our mission of realizing a substantial BESS pipeline in Germany,” Juritsch added.
BW ESS said the collaboration allows for potential future expansion as new opportunities emerge.
“We continue to be impressed with [Zelos’] agility and speed,” said Roberto Jiménez, executive director at BW ESS. “The expanded footprint in Germany reinforces BW ESS’ commitment to unlocking the value of energy storage.”
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts in Germany to support grid stability and integrate renewable energy sources by expanding energy storage capacity.
