Constantine Energy Storage has appointed Habitat Energy to optimise three new transmission-connected battery energy storage systems in the UK. The projects, located near Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds, will each feature 57MW, 2.7-hour battery energy storage systems, collectively providing 171MW/462MWh of flexible capacity. All three assets are expected to be operational by the summer of 2025.
This flexibility will play a crucial role in supporting the UK’s goal of achieving a net zero power system by 2030. The battery systems will help integrate more renewable energy into the grid, balance electricity supply and demand, and increase system resilience.
Mike Ryan, Commercial Director at Constantine Energy Storage Services, highlighted the company’s strategic position in the market: “Constantine Energy Storage is building a portfolio of battery energy storage systems across the UK. With over 2.5-hour duration systems, we are uniquely positioned to capitalise on new opportunities in the energy market.”
The three projects—Ocker Hill, Whitegate, and Monk Fryston—will each be managed by Habitat Energy, which has been involved with Constantine Energy Storage throughout the project lifecycle. Habitat Energy will lead the onboarding process for the assets, acting as the control point for the batteries once operational. The company will also optimise revenue across wholesale trading, ancillary service markets, and the Balancing Mechanism.
Jon Doughty, Managing Director UK at Habitat Energy, noted the complexity of managing transmission-connected assets and praised the partnership: “Transmission-connected assets carry significant complexity in terms of onboarding and operations. We’re proud to be recognised by Constantine for our exceptional track record and the sophistication of our approach.”
The partnership also marks a significant step for Habitat Energy, which now manages a portfolio of 2.8GW globally, including over 1.2GW in the UK. Habitat Energy’s innovative contracting structure will provide Constantine Energy Storage with enhanced revenue certainty as the projects move toward operation.
Constantine Energy Storage, founded in 2021 by Constantine Group, has already built a portfolio of over 1.6GWh of grid-scale battery storage across the UK, with an additional 770MWh under construction. With its growing portfolio and commitment to supporting the UK’s transition to renewable energy, the company aims to be a key player in the country’s energy future.
