London Stansted Airport has selected EDF Renewables UK to build and operate a new 14MW farm at its site, marking a significant step toward achieving its net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2038. The project, set to begin construction in early 2025, will be located on land to the east of the airport at High House Farm, an area already owned by Stansted.

The solar farm is designed to meet the airport's growing electricity demand, particularly with the increasing adoption of vehicles. It is also expected to help the airport reduce its carbon footprint, supporting its long-term sustainability objectives. As part of the project, the development will include measures to enhance local biodiversity, including the planting of over 50 trees, the reinstatement of hedgerows, and the creation of a 19-hectare wildflower meadow.

Mike Hardaker, Chief Asset and Development Officer at London Stansted, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are delighted to announce EDF Renewables UK as our partner for the development and operation of our 14.3MW solar farm, the first of its kind at any airport in the South-East of England,” Hardaker said. “The addition of the solar farm will enable us to build on our achievements and drive forward our pledge to make our operations net zero carbon by 2038.”

Stansted has already earned Level 3+ carbon neutral status in 2018, reflecting its efforts to reduce and offset carbon emissions. Hardaker noted that the solar farm will allow the airport to generate renewable electricity on-site, further securing its energy supply and freeing up for use elsewhere on the .

Deanna Greenhalgh, Director of Development at SAS Energy, EDF Renewables UK's commercial and industrial solar division, also highlighted the importance of the project. “We are delighted to be working with London Stansted to construct and operate this new solar farm,” Greenhalgh said. “The project will contribute towards the decarbonisation of the airport, reducing its energy costs in an uncertain energy environment and will lead the way in showing how important transport hubs such as London Stansted can progress towards net zero targets.”

The solar farm is expected to play a key role in helping the airport meet its sustainability targets while also providing a model for other transportation hubs seeking to reduce their environmental impact.
