The developers of the 100MW Salamander floating wind project off the coast of Scotland have opened the second phase of a call for supplier innovations, aimed at fostering domestic supply chain participation during the construction and operational phases. The project, a joint venture between Orsted, Simply Blue Group, and Subsea7, is located 35 kilometers from Peterhead and represents a significant opportunity for technological advancements in floating wind energy.
The program, open from December 3, 2024, to January 14, 2025, invites organizations to propose solutions addressing specific project challenges, including construction safety, foundation integration, anchor technology, low-carbon materials, and vessel optimization. Selected suppliers will undergo technical evaluations to demonstrate the potential benefits of their innovations compared to existing engineering solutions.
Salamander's innovation manager, Tom Brown, stated: “We want to be engaging with the right people at the right time within our project development. From a technical perspective, we have already undertaken our concept and pre-FEED engineering stages, so we're in a better position now to identify solutions that will address project challenges. Not only is it an exciting time to be involved in the floating wind sector, moreover it is an exciting time to be part of the supply chain.”
The Salamander project, which was awarded a 100MW seabed lease under Crown Estate Scotland's INTOG leasing round, is scheduled to begin construction in 2027, with operations commencing in 2029. A webinar hosted by the Net Zero Technology Centre on December 3, 2024, will provide further details for interested suppliers.
