Arizona Public Service Co (APS), the state's largest utility, has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for nearly 7.3 GW of renewable and energy storage capacity to meet growing demand and progress toward its 2050 clean energy target.
The agreements, announced Wednesday, represent the utility's largest-ever capacity addition and include:
- 2.48 GW of solar PV through PPAs.
- 3.46 GW of energy storage, enhancing grid reliability during peak demand periods.
- 500 MW of wind energy sourced from projects in Navajo County.
Additionally, APS is advancing in-house projects. The Ironwood solar park in Yuma County will add 170 MW of solar capacity by 2026, while 150 MW of batteries will be installed at the Agave solar park in Maricopa County, operational since 2022.
These initiatives follow APS's 2023 All Source Request for Proposals (ASRFP), which aims to diversify and strengthen its energy portfolio.
APS currently serves 1.4 million customers across 11 counties and is targeting a fully clean energy mix by mid-century. This expansion underscores its commitment to transitioning Arizona's energy grid toward renewable and storage solutions while maintaining reliability.
