Austrian renewables developer RP Global has announced plans to install 3 GW of electrolysis capacity in Patagonia, Argentina, as part of the first phase of the “Gaucho Wind to Hydrogen and Green Ammonia” project.
The initiative will use a 4.2 GW wind farm to power electrolysers, generating over 21,340 GWh of electricity annually and producing up to 1.7 million tonnes of green ammonia per year, primarily for export to Europe.
The project has secured backing from Germany's International Hydrogen Ramp-up Programme (H2Uppp), managed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). This support follows a competitive bidding process held between February and June 2024, marking the Gaucho project as the first public-private partnership (PPP) for green hydrogen in Argentina.
In addition to construction, the partnership will conduct comprehensive studies on the feasibility and potential of large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production and export in Argentina. The findings will be made publicly available to aid stakeholders, including government entities, investors, and developers, in advancing the country's green hydrogen sector.
The PPP agreement will be formalized in Buenos Aires on November 21 at an event hosted by the Argentine-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. This marks a significant milestone for Argentina's ambitions to establish itself as a key player in the global green hydrogen market.
