The New South Wales government has approved an amendment allowing for the expansion of the Liverpool Range wind project to a capacity of 1.3 GW, utilizing fewer but more powerful turbines than originally planned.
This modification, announced on Sunday, seeks to implement more efficient technology for the project, which is currently owned by Tilt Renewables.
Located in the Central West of New South Wales, the wind farm will be developed between the townships of Coolah and Cassilis within the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The initial approval granted in 2018 outlined a plan for 267 turbines with a combined capacity of 962 MW.
However, after acquiring the project in 2019, Tilt Renewables proposed a revision in 2022 to reduce the number of turbines to 185 following community consultations aimed at minimizing visual impacts.
The updated AUD 2 billion (USD 1.32 billion/EUR 1.21 billion) project will increase the maximum height of the turbines from 165 meters to 215 meters. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 730,000 homes annually.
