An investigation has been initiated regarding damage to a wind turbine blade at SSE Renewables' 443 megawatt (MW) Viking wind farm on Shetland. The issue was identified on one of the 103 installed Vestas V117-4.2MW turbines at the site.
An SSE Renewables spokesperson confirmed that the company is collaborating closely with the turbine manufacturer, Vestas, which has “initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident.” The spokesperson added, “In line with our established safety procedures, the wind turbine has been disabled and access to the turbine and the surrounding area has been restricted and made safe.” They also reported that no injuries occurred, and there were no individuals nearby when the damage took place.
A representative from Vestas stated, “On 30 October 2024, a V117-4.2MW wind turbine experienced blade damage at the Viking wind farm. All plants and personnel are safe and accounted for, the site has been secured, and there were no injuries. Vestas will work with the customer to determine the root cause.”
The Viking wind farm was fully commissioned in August 2024, marking a significant milestone for the renewable energy project.
