Brazilian state-run oil and gas company Petrobras plans to invest BRL 60 million (USD 10.5 million/EUR 9.7 million) in the second phase of a sea wind testing and measuring initiative.
The investment will support the deployment of new Bravo floating Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) buoy units designed to collect and analyze offshore wind resources.
According to Petrobras, five new Lidar units are expected to begin operations in December, with additional units slated for deployment in late 2025.
The original Bravo unit has recently concluded a year of continuous wind measurement operations in the Areia Branca Sea off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. This unit was developed in collaboration with the Senai Institutes for Innovation in Renewable Energies (ISI-ER) and Embedded Systems (ISI-SE).
Mauricio Tolmasquim, Petrobras's Energy Transition and Sustainability Director, emphasized that this project phase is crucial for validating technology and launching Brazil's largest offshore wind mapping campaign, which is essential for assessing the technical feasibility of future offshore wind energy facilities.
