Israeli independent power producer Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd has successfully connected its 50-MW/102-MWh Swangate battery energy storage system (BESS) to the grid in Yorkshire, UK. The company announced that phased electricity transmission has commenced, with full transmission expected in the coming weeks.
Swangate, also referred to as West Melton, marks Econergy's inaugural battery operation in the UK. The project recently secured financing of approximately EUR 32 million (USD 35.3 million) from Goldman Sachs and has established a long-term route-to-market agreement with the investment banking firm for trading and optimization of the battery's output.
Operating in the UK and Poland, with recent expansions into Italy and Romania, Econergy has a pipeline of 10.6 GWh of energy storage projects currently in development. The company's UK BESS portfolio includes 26 projects with a total capacity of 6.8 GWh, comprising 15 co-location projects.
Looking ahead, Econergy plans to commission an 82-MWh battery currently under construction in Dalmarnock, Scotland, in the third quarter of next year. The company also aims to begin construction on additional energy storage facilities and solar parks in the UK during 2024 and 2025.
