SWM Breaks Ground on New Geothermal Heating Plant in Munich

Stadtwerke München (SWM) has commenced construction of a heating plant at Michaelibad in Neuperlach, southeast Munich, as part of its strategy to achieve carbon-neutral heating by 2040.

The project, first announced in 2022, will involve drilling four production wells and four injection wells, supplying heat to approximately 75,000 residents.

This facility will be SWM's seventh geothermal plant, contributing to its 1,000-kilometer district heating network, one of the largest in .

The network is set to expand by an additional 600 kilometers by 2040. Bavaria currently hosts 25 geothermal plants with a total output of 400 MW, and SWM is optimistic about further exploiting the region's geothermal potential.

Recently, SWM secured EUR 43.9 million in federal to support these expansion efforts.
