Revel has launched its first 24/7 public electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station in Manhattan, located at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side. This station marks a significant milestone for EV infrastructure in the city, as it addresses the longstanding challenge of limited charging options in Manhattan due to space constraints. The site, developed in partnership with New York City's Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), features 10 Kempower chargers, each with a capacity of 320 kW.
EV ownership in New York City, especially in Manhattan, has faced obstacles due to scarce public charging stations. While other boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens have seen an increase in EV infrastructure, Manhattan has remained a difficult place for EV drivers.
Revel's Co-Founder and CEO, Frank Reig, emphasized the importance of this new station, stating, “Hundreds of thousands of rideshare and taxi trips go in and out of Manhattan every day. With our new Pier 36 Charging Station, Revel is bringing the fastest charging on the market directly to those drivers so they can access EVs easier — saving them money and saving us all from breathing in more needless car pollution…This is Revel's first in the borough, but definitely not our last!”
This station expands Revel's network of fast chargers in New York City to 64, with the company planning to reach 300 chargers by the end of 2025. The significance of this development has been recognized by local leaders, including State Senator Brian Kavanagh, who remarked, “The introduction of this first 24/7 public fast charging station in Manhattan represents a pivotal step in our journey toward a zero-emission transportation network. With the busy flow of rideshare and taxi traffic in and out of Manhattan, providing the fastest charging options directly to drivers not only saves them money but also helps us all breathe a little easier by reducing harmful car pollution.”
NYCEDC President Andrew Kimball also praised the initiative, stating, “The opening of Revel's first Manhattan charging station will help New York City become an innovator in accelerating low-carbon alternatives in the transportation sector.”
Revel's growing network of EV fast chargers will support the increasing number of electric ride-share vehicles in the city. As of October 2023, the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission had issued 10,000 new licenses for electric-for-hire vehicles, with EV trips now making up over 10 percent of the city's total ride-share volume, or around 1.5 million rides per month.
