Renewable energy sources in Spain generated 12,665 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity in June, marking a 29% increase compared to the previous year, according to early estimates released by Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).
The share of renewables in the total generation mix for June decreased slightly to 58.7% from 63.0% estimated in May. Photovoltaic solar power retained its leading position for the second consecutive month with a 22.2% share, surpassing wind power (20.5%) and nuclear energy (20.1%).
On June 21, solar photovoltaic plants achieved a daily production record, contributing 201 GWh, which accounted for 26.8% of the total electricity generated, REE reported.
For the January-June period, renewables accounted for 59.8% of Spain's total electricity generation.
In June, national electricity demand decreased by 1.6% to 19,525 GWh gross. Adjusting for temperature and working hours, national electricity demand rose by 0.9% year-on-year.
During the first half of 2024, Spain's electricity demand totaled 120,892 GWh, marking a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
