Engie has embarked on the construction of two new wind farms in Cadiz, southern Spain, marking a significant step towards bolstering its renewable energy footprint in the region. The Cerro Cabello and El Patron wind farms, located in the town of Los Barrios, are set to collectively generate 37MW of clean energy and are slated for operation by the second quarter of 2025.
Loreto Ordonez, CEO of Engie in Spain, underscored the company's commitment to sustainable development and local prosperity: “At Engie, we are committed to leading the energy transition through innovative projects that not only reduce carbon emissions, but also boost the economic and social development of local communities.”
The construction of these wind farms is expected to create between 140 and 200 direct jobs, contributing to the economic vitality of the region. Engie has implemented stringent biodiversity protection measures at both sites, including the establishment of access roads and firebreaks, aligning with its environmental stewardship principles.
Ordonez emphasized Engie's dedication to fostering resilience against climate change: “Our investment in renewable energy is tangible proof that it is possible to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.”
These projects expand Engie's existing renewable energy portfolio in Spain, which currently includes approximately 1700MW of renewable assets encompassing wind farms, solar installations, and mini-hydro plants. The company's presence in Andalusia is further strengthened by initiatives like the Meridion solar park in Huevar Del Aljarafe, Seville, which boasts a capacity of 72MW.
