Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has submitted an application to Stafford Borough Council for planning consent for the Leaford solar project, a 30MW solar farm in north-west England. If approved, the project could deliver a significant 74% net gain in biodiversity.
The proposed site is located on land between Stallington and Saverley Green. RES has outlined a comprehensive plan for biodiversity enhancement, including the planting of wildflower meadows, native trees, and over 2 km of new hedgerow. Additionally, the project will feature hedgehog houses, bee banks, and bird boxes, providing vital resources for wildlife and enhancing biodiversity on the site.

The solar farm will also include energy storage, increasing the flexibility and generation opportunities of the site. Detailed environmental and technical studies have been conducted, and design changes have been made in response to community consultation. These changes include reshaping the layout to reduce potential visibility from Fulford village and Saverley Green Road, as well as repositioning the site entrance to prevent tree loss.
Claire Chamberlain, Development Project Manager for RES, emphasized the importance of prioritizing biodiversity, particularly in light of the recent State of Nature Report's findings of a 19% decline in average species abundance across the UK since 1970. Chamberlain stated, “Projects like Leaford Solar Farm not only deliver a significant boost to biodiversity but are sustainable in other ways.” She highlighted that the low-intensity regime of a solar farm allows for soil quality regeneration, ensuring the availability of high-quality agricultural acreage for future generations.
Chamberlain also expressed gratitude for the community feedback received, noting that the proposal has been improved as a result. She stated, “We believe that the proposal is much improved as a direct result of the community feedback received, and we are grateful to everyone who took the time to engage with us and share their views.”
