Yara International ASA marked a pivotal moment in sustainable industry on Monday with the official opening of its 24-MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park, an event graced by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
The fertiliser giant celebrated the occasion by announcing the delivery of its first batches of green ammonia-based fertilisers from the facility.
“We are very pleased to have delivered the first tonnes of low-carbon footprint fertilisers to Lantmännen, a partnership which serves as a concrete example of how collaboration across the entire food value chain is required to decarbonise. Together, we have made this important step towards decarbonising hard to abate sectors,” remarked Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara.
In addition to producing green ammonia using renewable energy sources, Yara plans to incorporate blue ammonia generated through carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
The resulting low-carbon fertilisers will form part of the newly introduced Yara Climate Choice portfolio.
The inauguration of the hydrogen plant underscores Yara's commitment to advancing sustainable practices in industrial operations, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
