TotalEnergies and Air Products have inked a 15-year agreement for the annual supply of 70,000 tons of green hydrogen to Europe, set to commence in 2030. This accord follows TotalEnergies' call for tenders to procure 500,000 tons per year of green hydrogen, aimed at decarbonizing its European refineries. Under the terms, Air Products will deliver green hydrogen from its global network, mitigating approximately 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Patrick Pouyanné, CEO and chairman of TotalEnergies, highlighted the significance of the deal, stating, “This deal with Air Products, the first signed following the call for tenders launched last year, is a steppingstone towards our goal of decarbonizing the hydrogen used in TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe by the end of the decade.”
Air Products Chairman, President, and CEO, Seifi Ghasemi, emphasized the pivotal role of clean hydrogen in decarbonization efforts, stating, “We always believed that if we made clean hydrogen available at commercial scale, the demand would be there. This contract validates our long-term strategy.”
In addition to the hydrogen supply agreement, the companies have entered a memorandum of understanding for renewable power supply, including the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 150MW from a solar project in Texas. The collaboration aims to explore further PPA opportunities in the UK, Poland, and France.
This landmark agreement not only advances TotalEnergies' objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also aligns with Air Products' decarbonization roadmap, marking a significant stride towards a cleaner energy future.
