Hitachi Energy Announces Upgrade of Power Transformer Factory in Canada

has unveiled plans for a comprehensive upgrade and modernization of its power transformer factory in Varennes, , along with other facilities in Montreal. This initiative aims to address the burgeoning demand for sustainable energy solutions across .

With an investment exceeding $100 million (approximately CAD$140 million), these projects, supported by from the Government of Quebec through Investissement Quebec, underscore Hitachi's commitment to ramping up its global transformer manufacturing capacity to support long-term electrification efforts.

The Varennes facility, operational since 1971, serves as Hitachi Energy's primary manufacturing location for large power transformers in North America. It plays a crucial role in supporting national and regional power grids, as well as utility-scale projects.

Bruno Melles, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Business Unit Transformers, highlighted the company's dedication to meeting growing demand, stating, “Globally, demand for transformers and electrical equipment continues to grow at an unprecedented scale. At Hitachi Energy, we are continuously developing our global footprint and capacity to address our customers' mid- and long-term needs.”

The upgrade project includes the establishment of a new on-site transformer testing facility, aimed at enhancing the company's ability to certify power transformers manufactured in Varennes. This additional facility, spanning 12,000 square meters, is slated for completion before the end of 2027.

Melles emphasized the significance of this initiative in meeting Quebec's ambitious energy goals, stating, “In addition to our global investments, the support of the Quebec government will help to address North America's rising demand for transformers to support fast-growing sectors like renewable energy, data centers, and industrial electrification, as Quebec strengthens its role as a key player in the energy transition.”
