Polish utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA and Denmark's Ørsted A/S have secured permits to proceed with offshore construction at the Baltica 2 wind farm, situated in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea. The approvals, granted by the Pomeranian Voivodeship, represent the final regulatory hurdle for the project, as announced by PGE on Friday.
The permits authorize the installation of 107 wind turbines, along with four marine transformer stations and associated power distribution infrastructure. Baltica 2 forms a key component of the larger Baltica Offshore Wind Farm project, which boasts a total capacity of 2.5 gigawatts.
Positioned approximately 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) off Poland's northern coastline, between Leba and Ustka, the project is slated to commence operations by the conclusion of 2027, pending a final investment decision.
In recent developments, Dutch marine contractor Van Oord has been tasked with the transportation and installation of monopile foundations for Baltica 2. Additionally, GE Vernova and Polimex Mostostal have been selected to oversee the deployment of onshore infrastructure facilities. Siemens Gamesa is set to supply the project with 14-megawatt turbine generators.
