Taiwan successfully constructed approximately 2,250 MW of offshore wind capacity off its coast in 2023, surpassing its offshore wind power installation target for the year, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Despite facing challenges such as typhoons and a limited construction window lasting 6-7 months, a total of 283 turbines were installed during the year.
This achievement signifies Taiwan's commitment to its renewable energy policy, with offshore wind power playing a pivotal role in the country's energy transition. The Ministry of Economic Affairs highlighted that the collaborative efforts of Taiwan's energy department, wind farm developers, and a dedicated task force have been instrumental in tracking and facilitating the project's progress.
Having achieved the 2023 installation target, Taiwan is now poised to continue its momentum in the offshore wind sector. A joint effort between the public and private sectors aims to install 314-374 wind turbines in 2024, with a cumulative installation capacity ranging from 2.56 GW to 3.04 GW. This ongoing collaboration reflects Taiwan's dedication to furthering its renewable energy objectives and fostering a sustainable energy landscape.
