China has unveiled plans to actively expand its utilization of geothermal energy. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing made this announcement during a recent conference, highlighting China's determination to adopt cleaner sources of power for heating purposes.
Furthermore, China is set to increase the scale of its wind and solar power projects, while also advancing the construction of nuclear power plants in a safe and sustainable manner, as emphasized by Zhang.
During the same conference, Ma Yongsheng, the chairman of state-owned refiner Sinopec, outlined ambitious targets for geothermal heating. Sinopec intends to add a staggering 75 million square meters of geothermal heating area to its existing infrastructure, with the aim of reaching a remarkable 160 million square meters by the end of 2025. Ma noted that Sinopec has already amassed geothermal capacity exceeding 85 million square meters over the course of 11 years of development.
Notably, the utilization of clean power sources, such as geothermal energy, in northern China has played a significant role in improving air quality. Zhang Jianhua, Director of the National Energy Administration of China, acknowledged the positive impact of these efforts on the environment.
China's National Energy Administration has put forth ambitious goals, including a 50% increase in geothermal heating-cooling area over the five years from 2020, alongside a plan to double geothermal power generation capacity. These initiatives reflect China's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning towards more sustainable energy sources.
