Australian Capital Territory Announces Funding Initiative to Boost Rooftop Solar PV Adoption

The government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has unveiled a new initiative to support the widespread adoption of rooftop solar (PV) systems within its jurisdiction, which could have a significant impact on Canberra's energy mix.

Valued at A$3.6 million (US$2.4 million), the scheme aims to encourage individuals to invest in solar panels for their rooftops by offering tax rebates. Additionally, body corporates such as housing associations and property management groups will have access to concessional loans, further facilitating the installation of solar panels.

This initiative draws upon existing legislation, including the Solar Banks project and the Sustainable Household Scheme, both aimed at promoting sustainable energy practices in the ACT. Body corporates will be eligible to receive A$50,000 from each of these projects.

The Solar Banks project, a A$100 million endeavor implemented by the Labor Party, seeks to establish 85 solar banks nationwide, thereby enhancing Australians' access to solar power. Meanwhile, the Sustainable Household Scheme involves a A$150 million investment in domestic energy infrastructure, allowing ACT citizens to borrow up to A$15,000 for the installation of power facilities like batteries and solar panels.

The ACT government expects approximately 2,100 households to benefit from the tax rebates and loans provided under this initiative. It is predicted that the introduction of solar installations will lead to a 35% reduction in bills for those utilizing the panels. To support this project, the federal government has committed an additional A$80 million to the Sustainable Household Scheme, although the exact amount allocated to the overall initiative remains undisclosed.

This latest undertaking by the federal territory underscores its commitment to promoting solar energy adoption across the region. In 2020, the ACT successfully achieved its target of generating 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. As of January this year, the 's Clean Energy Regulator reported that nearly 47,000 small-scale solar power systems had been installed in the ACT.

Nevertheless, the government aims to further expand this figure, as the average capacity of rooftop solar power installed per person in the ACT currently stands at approximately 668W, slightly below the national average of 732W.

In the broader context of Australia's solar power landscape, the announcement follows the signing of a between SmartestEnergy, and for a new 40MW solar park in Queensland. This development signifies the nation's ongoing commitment to expanding its solar energy infrastructure.
