Zelestra has begun construction of the 242MWdc Babilonia solar plant in Peru’s Arequipa region, the company said.
The project is supported by a long-term power purchase agreement with Celepsa, part of Grupo Unacem.
Zelestra said Babilonia forms part of the wider La Joya solar complex, which is expected to reach nearly 700MWdc and also includes the 300MW San Martín project and a further 125MW scheme in advanced development.
The company plans to install around 394,000 bifacial solar panels at the site, with commercial operations targeted for the first half of 2027.
Celepsa chief executive Eduardo Rivas said the project aligns with the company’s supply strategy.
“Celepsa’s participation in this project is part of our strategy to ensure a reliable and competitive energy supply for our customers, supporting the development of the country’s energy sector.”
José Luis García Pérez, chief executive of Zelestra in Latin America, highlighted the importance of the market.
“Peru is a key market for Zelestra in the region. Babilonia reflects our long-term commitment to developing large-scale, reliable and high-performance projects that generate value for our customers, drive the energy transition and contribute to the economic and social development of the communities where we operate.”
Zelestra said construction of the plant is expected to create more than 500 direct jobs, prioritising local labour. Once operational, the facility is projected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply around 350,000 homes in Peru.
