China’s state-owned energy group CNOOC plans to lift its offshore wind power capacity by around 40% this year to 3.5GW, according to remarks by chairman Zhang Chuanjiang reported by China Petrochem Magazine.
The increase underscores the company’s expanding role in China’s renewable energy sector alongside its traditional oil and gas business.
The magazine previously reported that CNOOC has partnered with Ming Yang Smart Energy Group to deploy advanced turbine models in offshore projects located in southern Chinese provinces.
Official data from the National Energy Administration shows China’s offshore wind capacity has reached about 47GW, representing roughly 10% of the country’s onshore wind fleet.
Beijing has pledged to double the nation’s combined wind and solar capacity by 2035, with offshore wind expected to play a growing role in balancing solar power’s lack of night-time generation.
