Ground investigation works have begun at the Stornoway wind farm on the Isle of Lewis, marking a key milestone for the onshore project, developer Lewis Wind Power said.
Lewis Wind Power, a 50:50 joint venture between ESB and EDF Power Solutions UK, has consent to build 33 turbines on land owned by the Stornoway Trust.
The company said the works include drilling and trial pitting to assess ground conditions, alongside analysis of rock from proposed borrow pit locations so on-site materials can be reused during construction.
Construction is expected to start in late 2027. The investigations are being carried out by Natural Power Consultants and RPS Consulting Services, supported by local contractors D Mackay and Son and Calmax Construction.
Construction project manager Alister Maciver said the programme marks an important step in pre-development and will help ensure the project is delivered responsibly and efficiently, using local materials where possible.
Lewis Wind Power also said it has opened applications for its annual sponsorship fund, which provides £12,500 a year for local projects, with the deadline extended to Feb. 27, 2026.
