Vestas said it has secured a 390-megawatt contract for the Shinan-Ui offshore wind project off Jeollanam Province, marking the Danish turbine maker’s first offshore wind order in South Korea.
The project is being developed by the Shinan-Ui Offshore Wind consortium, which includes Hanwha Ocean, SK Eternix, Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO), Future Energy Fund and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the company said.
The order comprises 26 V236-15.0MW offshore wind turbines, alongside a 20-year service agreement aimed at optimising long-term performance and availability.
“We are proud to partner with Hanwha Ocean on this milestone project in South Korea and introduce our industry-leading V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines to South Korean waters,” Purvin Patel, president of Vestas Asia Pacific, said in a statement.
Patel added that the turbine model is already being deployed in initial European projects, with production scaling up to support wider global rollouts.
Hanwha Ocean said the project represents a first for the country’s offshore wind sector. “This project represents Korea’s first utility-scale offshore wind development to fully incorporate global standards across turbines, installation vessels, offshore substations and grid systems,” said Jong Hyun Son, head of the company’s eco energy and industrial EPC division.
Turbine deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2028.
Vestas said the V236-15.0MW turbine, which received type certification in 2023, has secured more than 9 gigawatts of firm orders worldwide.
