Swiss energy company Axpo and Israeli firm Energix have signed an agreement to optimise Poland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), the companies said on Tuesday, marking a milestone in Axpo’s growing storage portfolio.
The 24MW/56MWh facility, located in Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, is undergoing commissioning and prequalification for participation in Poland’s balancing market. Once licensed in January 2026, it will become the country’s first utility-scale BESS, supporting the transition to a more flexible and resilient grid.
Under the agreement, Axpo will manage revenue optimisation for the project, providing commercial, regulatory and technical support to integrate the facility into the wholesale and balancing markets. The system, sited near the Krajnik power station, complements Energix’s nearby wind and solar farms, which are also managed through Axpo’s portfolio.
Mateusz Marczewski, managing director of Axpo in Poland, said: “As one of the first companies in Poland, we have developed comprehensive contractual and commercial solutions for the optimisation of battery energy storage systems. Axpo’s flexible solutions can rapidly bring to market new services that stabilise the grid and increase the profitability of renewable projects.”
Energix Polska chief executive Artur Violante added: “Axpo is a proven and reliable partner for us, combining international know-how with local experience. The Nowe Czarnowo storage facility is just the beginning. The development of energy storage solutions like this is a key pillar of our expansion strategy in Poland and globally.”
The companies said the BESS will operate alongside existing wind and solar assets, enabling full management of local energy production and optimising grid connection costs with Poland’s transmission system operator, PSE. Axpo and Energix already collaborate through seven renewable power purchase agreements covering 300MW of wind and 40MW of photovoltaic capacity, with the BESS partnership including a profit-sharing model and provisions for ancillary market participation.
Axpo noted that it is expanding its international battery storage operations, building on experience in Switzerland and other European markets.
