Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT) has selected Austria-based Andritz to modernise two pumped storage units at the 720-megawatt (MW) Srinagarind hydropower plant in Kanchanaburi province, the company said.
The contract, valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, includes the replacement of two 180MW pump-turbine units, motor generators and associated electromechanical equipment. The work is aimed at improving efficiency, reliability and grid stability at one of Thailand’s largest hydropower facilities.
Located on the Kwai Yai River, the Srinagarind plant provides base-load power, peak-load support and grid balancing for Thailand’s electricity system. Andritz previously carried out the modernisation of the plant’s three Francis turbine units.
“This modernisation will ensure efficient and reliable operation of the pumped storage units for many years to come, securing Srinagarind’s role as a cornerstone of Thailand’s power system,” Andritz said in a statement.
The company plans to use its advanced manufacturing facilities in India and its global engineering network to complete the project.
EGAT, Thailand’s largest power producer, operates more than 50 power plants with a combined capacity exceeding 16 gigawatts (GW). It is also involved in a number of international energy projects.
Andritz has been active in Thailand for more than 50 years, contributing to nearly half of the country’s installed hydropower capacity through new construction and modernisation work. The latest contract further strengthens the company’s long-term cooperation with EGAT and supports Thailand’s renewable and low-carbon energy ambitions.
