Wind Energy Ireland has welcomed the Irish government’s commitment of €8 million in Budget 2026 to support the development of offshore wind, aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
The funding will be used to conduct marine surveys to identify potential sites for future offshore wind projects under Ireland’s Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP), which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
In addition to survey funding, the budget includes increased support for key State agencies involved in the sector, including the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority, transmission system operator EirGrid, and ESB Networks.
“This announcement provides the confidence that the necessary funding will be available to do the job properly,” said Noel Cunniffe, chief executive of Wind Energy Ireland. “Ensuring we have the right people, expertise and resources in place to deliver the national DMAP on time is essential.”
Cunniffe added that the investment “will help transform our electricity system and accelerate the delivery of clean, affordable and secure energy for Irish families and businesses.”
Wind Energy Ireland said the measures would help unlock the potential of offshore wind while supporting the broader goal of decarbonising the energy system and enhancing energy security.
