The initial monopile foundations for the 1,500-megawatt (MW) Baltica 2 offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea have been completed, developers Ørsted and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna said on Friday.
The monopiles, manufactured by Germany’s EEW Group, each measure up to 100 metres in length and 10.5 metres in diameter, and weigh nearly 2,000 tonnes.
Baltica 2, part of Poland’s broader efforts to increase renewable energy capacity, is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2027. Once fully commissioned, it is projected to supply electricity to approximately 2.5 million households, making it the largest offshore wind installation in the country.
“Production is progressing on schedule,” said Patrick Harnett, chief construction officer at Ørsted. “Baltica 2 is a key part of Ørsted’s 8.1 gigawatt offshore wind construction programme for 2025 to 2027.”
The project is being developed as part of a joint venture between Denmark-based Ørsted and Polish utility PGE, which aims to strengthen Poland’s energy security and contribute to its transition away from fossil fuels.
