Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) has selected Siemens Gamesa to supply 35 turbines for the 495-megawatt (MW) Formosa 4 offshore wind project off the coast of Taiwan, the companies said on Monday.
The 14MW turbines will be manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s nacelle facility in Taichung, reinforcing the company’s industrial footprint in the region.
“The Formosa 4 project reaffirms our commitment and will strengthen our local industrial nacelle production in Taichung further,” said Mogens Jakobsen, Siemens Gamesa’s Global Head of Sales.
Formosa 4 was awarded capacity in Taiwan’s Phase 3 Zonal Development auction in 2022 and became the first project among round one winners to receive an establishment permit, which it secured in 2024. The wind farm will be located off Miaoli County and is expected to supply electricity to approximately 500,000 households annually.
The agreement extends the relationship between SRE and Siemens Gamesa, who previously partnered on the Formosa 1 and Formosa 2 offshore wind farms.
“Over the past six years, we have delivered Formosa 1, Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm, and Formosa 2, the first among Phase 2 projects to reach commercial operation. Now we’re building on that success with Formosa 4,” said SRE Chairperson Lucas Lin.
“Given the strong partnership forged with Siemens Gamesa during Formosa 1 and 2, we’re pleased to have them on board again for Formosa 4, deepening the collaboration and advancing sustainability together,” he added.
SRE’s Chief Projects Officer Sahand Holm described the deal as the outcome of “a thoughtful and collaborative journey,” citing “dedication, professionalism, and perseverance” from both teams.
The Formosa 4 project is part of Taiwan’s broader push to scale up offshore wind capacity as it transitions towards greater energy independence and reduced carbon emissions.
